They say first level of Maslow's hierarchy, I say the last!!

I have my mid term review today with my boss & the big boss. I am going to be asked questions like – What are your long term objectives? How long do you wish to be in this country? What are your career aspirations – which country from here , which division , which role etc ? Where do you see yourself after 2, 5 and 10 years?

And the problem is that I don’t know. Yes I dont. And I am ok with that.

I never claimed to be career oriented, or ambitious. And I have reached here by natural progression – without proactively doing anything about it. I am good at what I do. But that’s about it! I work because I cant sit idle. I don’t see the motivation to go places in my career. Heading a unit doesn’t motivate me. Maybe I am weird. Or maybe just that I am in the wrong profession. I don’t know.

I like being honest. But I am aware of the fact that if someone mentioned this in their review, probably the management would think of that person as someone lacking drive hence label that person as a non performer. I don’t want them to think like that. For the simple reason that its not true. I am at the same place in this point in time as many of my other peers who were proactive all along in their efforts to reach this position. So like I said my performance has ensured my natural progression. And I am content to be in this place at this without having a future plan. Not because this place in my career is the end that i had envisioned, but for the simple reason that i am a person who doesn't need too much to feel content. I do not rely on having an ambition (career wise) to feel happy & alive.

Maybe I am in that phase of my life where something else is of a higher importance to me than career (Although I doubt if career would ever become my top priority …but that remains to be seen!). And that something else is - ensuring companionship for myself. Yes companionship..more so, for my old age. As of right now I don’t have any complaints about being single. I don’t mind being single, infact enjoy the me-time.

Coming back to my review… what is the best way I can get these guys to figure out that my not gunning for any bigger role or country of strategic importance doesn’t automatically imply that I have lost all interest in my work? That my being content in this place & not having a 10 year plan doesn't mean that I am anti-progression & surprisingly when the progress is for my OWN self. Now being the management, they should be equipped to see things clearly. BUT do they really have the time, more importantly, the willingness to play psychoanalyst for just another employee, revenue generating alright, but just another employee. I don’t think so.

Anyway …enough of whining. Let me go to that damn meeting now. After all I have to negotiate my increment in this meeting. I like the idea of more money.

And No, I don’t wear glasses for my myopia.

What colour is your Brain?

I attended a Management Training recently where I was told what colour is my brain. It was a very interesting exercise and gave some real good insights. Basically you have to fill in a 30-45 min questionnaire to get the results. You can look it up on the net and take the test, but its not free. However, this is what i was able to extract from different sources available on the internet. If you know the concept, you can broadly understand how your brain works and benefit from that understanding.

Hermann's Whole Brain Model

People learn in many different ways. The brain is the source of who we are and how we learn. According to the Whole Brain Model from Ned Herrmann, each person basically has four brains when it comes to the process of thinking and learning. Depending on which quadrants we engage, our learning processes can be very different.

Brain dominance leads to thinking style preferences, which impact what we pay attention to and how and what we learn best. Each of these four "brains" or quadrants is listed below with words that typically characterize a person who uses that thinking style.

The Whole Brain Model is a mental model that describes thinking preferences. These are the ways of thinking that satisfy us the most and seem natural for us at this point in our lives. These ways of thinking can change, often as a result of significant emotional experiences, life transitions and other important insights. Thinking preferences describe the patterns of what we prefer to pay attention to and what we don't prefer to pay attention to.

Thinking preferences can be different than our skills or the content of our work or our behavior, depending upon the situation. When we think or function differently than our preferences, even if we have excellent skills, it's more likely that we'll find it somewhat uncomfortable and consuming more of our energy.

The four thinking styles in the Whole Brain Model are:

  1. BLUE - Logician/ Theorist (The Rational Self) - Analytical, mathematical, technical and problem solving. These are people who like lecture, facts, and details, critical thinking, textbooks and readings, etc. The brain dominance for theorists is the upper left (cerebral).
  2. GREEN - Organizer (The Safekeeping Self) - Controlled, conservative, planned, organized and administrative in nature. These are people who prefer to learn by outlining, checklists, exercises and problem solving with steps, policies and procedures. People with these preferences have lower left (limbic) brain dominance.
  3. RED - Communicator / Humanitarian (The Feeling Self) - Interpersonal, emotional, musical, spiritual and the "talker" modes.: Prefer cooperative learning and group discussion, role-playing, and dramatization. Their brain preference is lower right (limbic)
  4. YELLOW -Visionary / Innovators (The Experimental Self) - : Imaginative, synthesizing, artistic, holistic and conceptual modes. Innovators prefer brainstorming, metaphors, illustrations and pictures, mind mapping and synthesis, and holistic approaches. The brain dominance for innovators is upper right (cerebral).

A Rational Self

knows how things work,
knows about money,
likes numbers,
is realistic,
is critical,
is logical,
quantifies,
analyzes

D Experimental Self

infers,
imagines,
is curious/plays,
likes surprises,
breaks rules,
speculates,
is impetuous takes risks

B Safekeeping Self

plans,
timely,
is neat,
organizes,
is reliable,
gets things done,
establishes procedures,
takes preventative action

C Feeling Self

feels,
talks a lot,
is emotional,
is expressive,
is supportive,
touches a lot,
likes to teach,
is sensitive to others

You may see yourself in more than one quadrant. The research indicates that people may use more than one style primarily. In fact, a majority of people has at least two primary quadrants. Each person can have primary preferences (areas of the brain he/she goes too easily and enjoys), secondary preferences (areas of the brain that can be and are accessed when necessary) and tertiary preferences (areas a person may have difficulty accessing or may even avoid). You also don't need to identify with everything in the quadrant to have some strength there. People have varying degrees of dominance in the quadrants.

So readers, what do you think is the dominant colour of your brain?

At the core of the most recent book of Ned Herrmann, lies his belief that the functioning of the human brain is driven by a four-quadrant interconnected set of mental processing modes. These four thinking styles, says Herrmann, originate in the brain's left and right cerebral hemispheres, and in the left and right half limbic systems, each resulting in significantly different and distinct behavioral characteristics in human beings. How this complex brain interaction determines thinking mode dominance and thinking style preferences, and how individuals and organizations can benefit from such understanding, are the main themes of Herrmann's book. Hermann's work is widely used by training and development specialists. The Whole Brain Model supersedes "left brain/right brain" thinking in earlier models. Also it has advanced new concepts of thinking research and their applications in business settings. Dominant thinking in one of the four thinking styles, causes the development of thinking preferences. Then these thinking preferences establish our interests, foster the development of competencies, and influence our career choices and ultimately our work. Argues Herrmann.

Purpose..and lack thereof!!!

Just finished reading The Da Vinci Code...
And i agree with New York Times et al that its one hell of an intelligent thriller.... however it raised some fundamental questions for myself , which i guess i have always avoided for the lack of a clear answer.

Why do i fail to understand the concept for an eternal quest , more so the motivation of those quests.... quest for the ultimate truth , the ultimate wisdom or Nirvana? What next , after the success of your quest , after you find what you are seeking? Do you attain the ultimate happiness / contentment? What is ultimate happiness ??? Is it not ok to be content with day to day happiness? What would have happened if the Holy Grail secrets were found and revealed? Would it have changed the way Christians look at their God? I doubt that. After all , dont all religions in principle say on one level or the other that GOD is nothing but the goodness within you. Then how does it matter whether Jesus was married or not? How would have that changed the faith and the daily life of a devout Jesus follower who believes in the goodness of Jesus as the personnification of the concept of GOD?

Or are all these quests and their glorification thereof just an indication of the fact that its vital to have a guiding purpose in your life? So does it mean then that living life , devoid of any such purpose , is devoid of all meaning too?

I think of myself as an ordinary mortal who leads life without any such purpose in life. Now i dont see anything wrong with that and have simple philosophy of being a good human being , spend my lifetime as any other ordinary man/woman (eating , drinking , laughing , loving , procreating, parenting et al) . I have no such guiding purpose in my life except for trying to take the highs & lows of life in the same stride and enjoy most part of it. And i see no flaw in this philosophy of mine....except that , at times i am haunted by an Emptiness so strong that i am forced to seek within myself to find that purpose. I havent succeeded till now, after 30 years of doing so..... and the problem is I dont know whether I should hope that i find it (the purpose of my life) someday or I should hope that i manage to shoo away this feeling of emptiness afterall, with my living my life just the way it is!

Amitabh Bachchan ...five five five

Before i moved to this country , i did some net surfing to read up a little bit , just to get an idea of how life is going to be for me , an Indian there. Out of the many things that i learnt prior to my coming here was that these people just looooove Bollywood.... and the first thing that leaves their lips , after they realise / are told that you are an Indian , is "Amitabh Bachchan" (but pronounced more as Amitaaa Bachchan)

After being here for a week , surprisingly enough i hadnt come across any local who uttered the name of this Bollywood legend after getting to know that I am an Indian. So just when i was about to discard this whole theory of "India = Amitaaa Bachchan" according to the localites here , I happened to hire this cab.

Ok, so heres what happened!

One day after work , after much difficulty , i finally managed to get a cab to go to my hotel after work. (usually its pretty easy to find a cab ...just my luck that day , i guess!). So usually it takes about 6 bucks for this commute from my office to the Hotel , however i generally give ten when I am in a hurry and dont wish to waste time in negotiating. That day i was tired of trying to get a cab ...I had stopped some 6 cabs , told them where i want to go (by showing them this paper slip which i carry with me , one side of which has my hotel address , another side my office address written in the local language!)... and finally had managed to get inside one. This cab driver couldnt understand that i would pay him ten bucks (which is much more than its actually worth) , so i had to gesture 5 twice with my hand , just so he could understand the figure ten.

I dont know whether he understood or not , but i got in the cab anyway . On the way , he asked me if i was an American. I said no and tried to explain that I am fom India. He didnt understand India , but intelligently enough linked it to Hind after thinking for some time (Hind is a more common word for Indians/ India here!) . Just as he made this discovery , his eyes twinkled in delight , and pat came the words - "Amitaaa Bachchan?" . Then as if something hit him , the expression on his face took a 360 degree turn . He told me - "No five five...Amitaa Bachchan....five five five". And after that he kept singing five five five , Amitaa Bachchan , five five five ..... (repeat).....(repeat)...... wasnt ready to listen to me when i tried to protest.

So i sat calmly and thought to myself that i shouldnt ruin his moment of joy with this discovery of me being a Hind , or the discovery of his vocal talent at that very moment , or just remembering to practice his vocal chords (in case he was alraedy aware of his talent OR in case his family didnt let him practice in teh house , hence he was seeking refuge in the workplace i.e. the cab). When we reached my hotel , i told him NO five five five , only five five. He looked at me , made a puppy face and then not so happily took the money . He asked my name meanwhile and after that said - Man name?? (Surprisingly suddenly he knew English!) I said no Man. He then gestured to ask - how come i didnt have a bindi on my forehead if i was a Hind? I said no Man (once again) , No Marriage.... Then he suggested through hand gestures that maybe we should get married....

Out of all the unexpected that i had expected , these sure werent on my list .

.....A cab driver proposing marriage to me!

.....Amitabh Bachchan adding an extra five bucks in my cab fare!

So moral of the story - However much you try to preampt the unexpected , more often than not you will be taken aback (And if you are lucky , maybe this unexpected would amuse you too!)

Surpise, Surprise!!

Few things that took me by surprise in the last few days.Never thought that I would...

...reach office everyday at 9 am (I have never been able to make it before 10.30 in my entire work life!)

...have more coffee than tea in a day (And i have always been a tea person!)

...reject a house just because of the fact that it has a flight of stairs in the living room (which go nowhere!)

...like my Pakistani colleague the best in the office . After all , hes the most helpful of the lot here (and this lot by the way includes some Indian ex colleagues!)

...find the groceries & toiletries would be at the same price as India.

...find the malls being open till 2 am and crowded too (you would never feel its 2 already if you are inside the mall) .... and you could for vegetables at your local vendor till 4 in the morning.

And last but not the least - Food : Never thought i would...

...eat Pasta by choice (...trust me , this was the safest choice after the fiasco like lamb & lady fingers!...there is a typical dish here in which Mutton / lamb is cooked with lady fingers ....eeeeeeew!!)

...crave for Ice Cream ( I have always had ice cream when my friends wanted to , never by my own initiative!)

...be so happy to spot Mcdonalds or a chinese restaurant (anything familiar in food choices would make my spirits soar these days!)
